BZB decides: Ski season 2020/2021 in ski area Garmisch-Classic finally canceled

After the lockdown was extended again, the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG had to take action: The Garmisch-Classic ski area, which hosted the Alpine Ski World Cup on the past weekends, will no longer start operating this winter. The planning for a possible opening would be too short-termed by now.

Matthias Stauch, managing director of the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn explains the decision: “We evaluated all the arguments. The organizational and financial effort to prepare the ski area is immensely high. It is still not sure when the operation will be possible again. In the end, we are obliged to make the most acceptable decision from the economic point of view."

The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn still has no planning security and numerous challenges - for example, the November financial aid announced by politicians has not yet arrived.

Hope rests on ski area Zugspitze

Regardless of the Garmisch-Classic ski area, the skiing season on the Zugspitze has not yet been written off: the slope conditions, the weather and snow conditions are currently ideal. If at all, and when the season finally can start there, depends on further political decisions. Provided the conditions permit it, the ski season in Germany's highest ski area could even be extended into May.

Wank cable car ready to start

As soon as officially possible, the cable car at Mount Wank will also resume operations. In good snow conditions, the Mount Wank could offer tobogganers and winter hikers some wintersports fun.

Refund for time card holders already going

In January the BZB worked different models up, for seasonal and annual cardholders, to refund a proportion of unusable days, due to the lockdown. The application form is available online at zugspitze.de/erstattung or directly at the cash desks in the Zugspitzbahnhof Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
