Key information

What is happening?

The Schneefernerkopf lift on Zugspitze is being dismantled. There will no longer be a drag lift on the Nördlicher Schneeferner in future.

Why?

The melting glacier has caused a loss of volume, which has increasingly changed the terrain and made the slope significantly steeper. Due to the now steep exit at the upper end of the lift, it is no longer technically possible to operate the facility and the lift will be completely dismantled.

How?

Due to the enormous tension, the holding cables that keep the pillars together must be professionally cut through with a cutting charge from the mountain station. Next, the lift track will be gradually dismantled and the parts transported to Sonnalpin. Here, the parts will be taken apart, transported down to the valley by cogwheel train, and then disposed of.

When?

The holding cables will be cut on Friday, March 20, after the end of operations at 5 p.m. The remaining lift parts will be removed in the following days and weeks.

Are there any restrictions for guests?

No, the ropes are cut after the end of operations on March 20. In the following days, all currently open lifts, slopes and attractions —including the toboggan runs on the Zugspitzplatt—remain open.
