No skiers at Zugspitze

24/03/2021

The ski season 2020/2021 is completely canceled in the Corona winter – the summer season is now more important than ever

Due to the increasing number of infections, easing the ongoing lockdown is currently not possible. As a further consequence of this situation, the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG has to finally cancel the ski season at Zugspitze for this winter. In mid-February, the end of the winter season in the Garmisch-Classic area was decided, now the Zugspitze follows: From the operator's point of view, a late season opening like this makes sense also in Germany's highest ski area by now. The organizational and economic effort is no longer acceptable under these circumstances. Especially since a start from April 18th still remains insecure. The persistent uncertainty, the lack of perspective and no planning security are determining for the BZB's decision.

"We have to leave this catastrophic winter behind us as quickly as possible," says Matthias Stauch, managing director of the BZB. Now it is important to concentrate on the spring operation: “We are pleased that we are receiving a lot of inquiries at the moment. With our proven hygiene and safety concepts, we are optimistic about the summer.” The existing concepts are constantly being adapted according to the actual developments and legal regulations.

Ready for the summer season

As soon as the service for guests is officially permitted and the hiking trails are open, the company will start operating the cable car Zugspitze, as well as the cable cars on Mount Wank, Kreuzeck, Alpspitze and Hochalm. In Addition the cogwheel train then will run to the summit station again. If possible also the affiliated restaurants will reopen.

Winter season 2021/2022 at Zugspitze starts on 19. December 2021

The BZB has already set a date for ski opening next winter: The Zugspitze ski area will start the winter season on November 19, 2021 and finally welcome skiers again.
