Last day of operation of the Kreuzwankl-Ski-Express – New construction in summer 2025

25/03/2025

Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG (BZB) starts its last day of operation in the Garmisch-Classic area on March 30.

The end of the ski season marks the end of an era: one of the most important lifts in the ski area, the Kreuzwankl-Ski-Express, has its last day of operation. After more than 25 years of service, the lift has come to the end of its life and is due for a complete replacement. The newly built Kreuzwankl-Ski-Express is set to go back into operation at the start of the 2025/2026 winter season.

The linchpin of the Garmisch-Classic since 1997

The detachable chairlift was built in 1997 and is the first 6-seater chairlift ever built in Germany with a length of 1000 meters and a height gain of 178 meters.  In current ski operations, the maximum passenger capacity is 14,000 to 15,000 guests per day and around 2,400 people per hour. The high frequency of ski beginners (due to the proximity to the children's area) and the high circulation speed in the valley station led to numerous shutdowns during the day. Waiting times at the lift were 20 minutes or more on busy days. The new lift will improve guest comfort, make access easier and reduce waiting times.

New Kreuzwankl-Ski-Express brings more comfort

The new lift from Doppelmayr will be extended to an 8-seater chairlift and will then transport significantly more guests at a maximum of 3,000 people per hour. The slower circulation speed in the valley station will make access more comfortable for guests in future. The entrance area is also height-adjustable, making it easier for ski schools and ski courses, beginners and children in particular to get on the lift. The aim is to reduce waiting times, avoid shutdowns and thus ensure smooth operation. The ascent is reduced by 40 seconds to 3 minutes 10 seconds with the new system.

Dismantling and rebuilding after the end of the season

In spring 2025, the old facility will be completely dismantled and the extensive civil engineering work will begin. The station buildings and column foundations will then be constructed so that the new facility can be built in fall 2025. The completion of the construction work and the opening of the new lift are planned for the start of the 2025/2026 winter season.
