Extensive revisions planned in 2024

Update April 29, 2024: The maintenance work could be completed a little earlier, so that the Wankbahn cable car and Sonnenalm restaurant will be open from April 30, 2024!

Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG starts the first day of summer operations on Mount Wank on the last day of skiing on Zugspitze. The Wankbahn scable car tarts operating on May 1st with musical entertainment in the Sonnenalm restaurant. Extensive maintenance work has been in progress since January in preparation for summer operation and will continue until Easter in the coming winter of 2024/2025.

Current revision work until the end of April - second phase in winter 2024/2025

In 2024, the Wankbahn cable car will undergo the most extensive work in its history. The cable car's main gearbox needs to be overhauled. This is located in the middle station and has already been removed, transported down into the valley and on to Witten. There, the seven-tonne gearbox was completely overhauled.

Summer operation is expected to be possible until the fall vacations before the next major overhaul phase begins: the drive motors of both sections and the associated control system need to be completely replaced, as the manufacturers of the installed components are no longer on the market. Spare parts are therefore no longer available. New bearings will also be fitted to the deflection pulleys, for which the ropes need to be tensioned.

Restaurants on Mount Wank open

With the start of the summer season on Mount Wank, the affiliated restaurants also open. The Wankstüberl, directly in the valley station of the cable car, is already open, the Sonnenalm in the mountain station starts the summer season with the opening of the Wankbahn cable car.
For breakfast guests there is once again the popular combination ticket, which includes a ride up and down the mountain with the Wankbahn cable car, a breakfast dish and a daily newspaper. Information and booking online at zugspitze.de/events.

Regulation for Wank leisure pass holders

Wank leisure pass holders should contact the ticket offices at Zugspitzbahn station Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Wankbahn cable car at the end of the validity period of their pass. At the end of the validity period, they will receive a pro rata refund for April 2024, if the annual pass was valid in this month. Premature refunds are not possible.
