Zugspitze starts the ski season with the first lifts
Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG opens this year's winter season on Friday, November 29, 2024 with the Zugspitze.
The natural snow ski area on Germany's highest mountain opens the Sonnenkar chairlift and the Wetterwandeck chairlift at the start of the season. Four neighboring runs (slopes 2, 3, 7 and 8) will be open to skiers. Around 50 cm of natural snow awaits winter sports enthusiasts.
Pedestrians and winter excursionists can stroll around the Sonnalpin, the chapel and towards the igloo village that is currently under construction; the family toboggan run away from the ski slopes is already open.
The Ticket Zugspitze (pedestrian and skier) costs 66.00 euros for adults. As part of the family discount, one adult and two children up to and including the age of 18 pay 115.50 euros for a day of skiing together. The TwinTicket (2 days within one season, Garmisch-Classic or Zugspitze freely selectable) is a discounted offer for skiers: online, the TwinTicket costs 116 euros, i.e. 58 euros per ski day.
In the Garmisch-Classic ski area, depending on snow conditions, the season is scheduled to start in mid-December, but no later than the start of the Christmas vacations on Friday, December 20.
Restaurant Gletscher 2600 completely vegetarian
New this winter is the gastronomic offer in the Gletscher 2600 restaurant: the menu here will be switched to vegetarian and partly vegan at the start of the season. “We want to set an example and show that it doesn't always have to be meat,” says Johannes Tiebel, Head of Gastronomy at the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, explaining this step.
The two other restaurants on the Zugspitze (Panorama 2962 at the summit and Sonnalpin on plateau Zugspitze) continue to offer meat-based dishes.
Wankbahn cable car must remain closed in winter 2024/2025
As already announced in detail in the press release at the beginning of the year, the most extensive maintenance work on the Wankbahn cable car in its history will be carried out in 2024 and spring 2025. The first operation after the extensive revisions is planned for Easter 2025. The motors and the entire control system for both sections are currently being replaced in the middle station and the cable car is currently not able to operate.
