Panoramic Mount Wank
Giant natural cinema plays from April to November on the panoramic mountain to the north-west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Locals and holidaymakers alike can take the comfortable Wankbahn cable car to the top of the 1,780-metre peak to access a sun-drenched walkers’ paradise.
Mount Wank might seem unassuming at first compared to its striking neighbours the Zugspitze and Alpspitze. Yet it’s precisely because there are no craggy cliff faces soaring into the heavens here, but rather a long and inviting summit plateau that the panoramic mountain is the first choice for pleasant hours on the mountain. Families with smaller and older children, fit seniors, people seeking peace and quiet, nature lovers – on Mount Wank they all find a place to refuel, take a breath and relax.
Walk and enjoy the sun against a phenomenal backdrop of the Esterberg, Ammer, Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains, down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Loisachtal Valley and stretching to the outskirts of Munich. Why not watch the launch preparations and manoeuvres of the paragliders and hang-gliders from one of the many benches – the best seats in the house!
Countless hiking options
Well-maintained trails connect the top and middle stations of the Wankbahn cable car and can be used in either direction depending on your fitness and motivation. The 3-km-long Höhenterrainweg, which encircles the summit plateau, is a real visual treat, offering new perspectives at every turn and each more beautiful and impressive than the last. The relatively flat terrain is great if you’re a little out of shape or unsteady on your feet. The terrace of the Sonnenalm beckons after your walk, or just as a destination in itself, offering a delightful place to savour the breathtaking setting. The other mountain restaurants also serve Bavarian specialities garnished with alpine idyll.
Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG has created a children’s play area for young visitors to Mount Wank right next to the top station of the Wankbahn cable car. A variety of child-friendly elements will have little ones scrambling, balancing and climbing against the impressive 360° panorama on Mount Wank.
