On Zugspitze: ski season ends and maypole stands

29/04/2025

Summer operation starts on Mount Wank and in the Garmisch-Classic area

An eventful month is drawing to a close at Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG (BZB). Skiing on the Zugspitze ends and Germany's highest maypole is up again. Summer operations start with the Alpspitz- and Hochalmbahn cable cars in Garmisch-Classic and the Wankbahn.

On Zugspitze: ski season ends

Ski operations on Zugspitze come to an end on May 4 and the Cable car Zugspitze as well as the cogwheel train are due for maintenance work immediately after the end of the winter season. For this reason, Zugspitze is expected to be completely closed from 05.05. to 09.05. and from 26.05. to 28.05. From 09.05. to 25.05. Zugspitze is open and accessible via the cogwheel train. The valley section of the cogwheel train between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau will be closed from 05.05. to 16.05. A rail replacement service will be set up on the route. The Hausberg stop will not be served. An alternative stop will be set up for the Hammersbach stop at the Zugspitzstraße/Höllentalstraße junction. Due to the longer journey time of the bus, there may be delays in the timetable. Guests can find the complete revision periods HERE.

Germany's highest maypole is standing

This year, an 18-metre-long maypole stands on Zugspitze. The tree, which is already 80 years old, comes from the so-called Zugwald forest on Lake Eibsee and was provided by the Hammersbach maypole association.

Summer preview: Panoramic mountain Wank with a packed program

After the most extensive overhaul work in the history of the Wankbahn and an incident that delayed the opening, the renovated cable car is now due to open on May 1st. In order to give visitors a better understanding of what is happening, the BZB will be offering technical tours of the Wankbahn with insights behind the scenes.
The Sonnenalm in the mountain station will also open with the cable car. It spoils its visitors with regional cuisine and a completely new menu. In addition, the children's playground directly at the mountain station has been extended to include some wooden equipment and swings.
Visitors to the Panoramaberg Wank can once again look forward to a varied program this summer. The combined ticket for the cable car ride and breakfast daily from 9-11 a.m. on the Wank is available when the cable car opens. Music continues on the terrace of the Sonnenalm on May 4 with Tyrolean brass music from the 7-piece band John Blow. On July 11 and 12, four bands will be performing live over two days at Wank Unplugged. Information and tickets are available under “Events”.

Alpspitz- and Hochalmbahn cable cars open

In the Garmisch-Classic area, the Alpspitzbahn and Hochalmbahn cable cars start summer operations on May 1st. The AlpspiX viewing platform, the Osterfelder 2000 restaurant and the forest trail between the Alpspitzbahn mountain station and the Hochalmbahn valley stationwill also open. Other hiking trails and via ferratas in the Alpspitz area are currently still closed due to the snow situation.
