Silent wonder on Mount Wank
The popular destination mountain opposite the Zugspitze reveals gentle winter experiences far away from the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes. Connoisseurs can immerse themselves in tranquil nature and personal experience while (snowshoe) walking, sledging, eating and collecting panoramic views at 1,780 metres.
Mount Wank is the best example of things to do apart from skiing, even in high season and right next to Germany’s top ski resorts Garmisch-Classic and Zugspitze. Over Christmas and New Year, when the Wankbahn cable car runs for two weeks between the valley and the summit plateau, the panoramic mountain near Garmisch-Partenkirchen is offering a family-friendly deceleration programme.
Welcome to the peak of happiness
Take a leisurely walk through the snow along the predominantly flat trails around the top station and enjoy the panoramic views of the Esterberg, Ammer, Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains. When there’s enough snow, Bayerische Zugspitzbahn provides a toboggan run at the top station of the Wankbahn cable car for speed lovers. Explorers can discover the still mountain landscape on guided snow shoe walks, which make those first attempts at walking easier in yeti style and include all the rental equipment.
With red cheeks and a desire for typical ski hut fare, winter walkers and sledgers head to the Sonnenalm restaurant sooner or later, where Bavarian specialities and rustic charm are on the menu. And once you’re looking out from the large sun terrace over the snowy Alpine panorama with a cup of hot chocolate in your hands, it’s the perfect winter fairytale – and relaxation.
