Disabled access on the Zugspitze
Where your handicap is no handicap
We recommend ascent and descent with the Cable car Zugspitze to individuals using a wheelchair or with a walking disability, who wish to visit Germany’s highest summit. A ramp enables step-free access to and exit from the cable car. Please ask your accompanying person to inform a cashier at the Eibsee cable car base station in advance, so a member of the staff can ensure barrier-free access to the platform.
The summit station is reached after a 10-minute ride in the Cable car Zugspitze. Within the building, you can use the elevator to go from one level to the other, including the terrace next to the Zugspitze summit. There, you can take in the awesome view of 4 countries and more than 400 alpine peaks all at once. This elevator offers you barrier-free access to all three stories of the building, all at close to 3000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level. Disabled friendly toilets can be found on the 2nd floor (1st floor in Germany) of the summit station.
The Zugspitze glacier around 300 meters below the Zugspitze peak can be easily accessed using the Glacier cable car, which starts at the summit station and reaches the Zugspitze glacier after a ride of only a few minutes. Here you will find the Sonnalpin glacier restaurant with spacious sun terrace. Both have ground-level access.
Please note that the Sonnalpin Glacier Restaurant toilets do not have disabled access.
The Kreuzeckbahn lifts provide barrier free and disabled friendly access to the Garmisch-Classic region. Wheelchair users roll from ground level into one of the cabins, which can accommodate up to 15 persons, before being whisked up to 1,650 metres above sea level in around seven minutes. Disabled toilets are available in both the base and top stations of the lifts.
We recommend use of the Alpspitzbahn lifts when visiting the AlpspiX viewing platform. Wheelchairs with a track width of max. 60 cm as well as guests with limited mobility can be transported to platform level using a special stair lift. Advance notice needs to be given at the cash desk should this service be required. Only very sporty wheelchair users who have the appropriate equipment, however, should attempt to visit the AlpspiX as the 100 metre path which leads to the platform in summer is very steep. Ski operations prevent wheelchair access for disabled persons in winter, when AlpspiX is only accessible via a staircase at the top station of the lifts.
You can reach the Hochalmbahn cable car via the top station of the Alpspitzbahn lifts. The Hochalmbahn cabins have a maximum entry width of 100 cm; a 10 cm high step also needs to be negotiated. A ramp is available at the base station of the lifts to aid exiting the platform. We only recommend that sporty wheelchair users attempt to undertake the Garmisch-Classic round trip and the associated onward lift ride to the Kreuzeckbahn with an appropriate sports wheelchair, as the Hochalmweg trail is very steep in parts and interspersed with rivulets. In this case, the return journey for wheelchair users can be undertaken easily with the Hochalmbahn and Alpspitzbahn lifts. Please note that in winter, the base station of the Hochalmbahn lifts is located in the middle of the Garmisch-Classic ski resort.
During the winter season, the Hausbergbahn lifts provide disabled friendly access to the Garmisch-Classic ski resort. You can comfortably roll over a ramp into one of the 8 person cabins and when you reach the top station, there are only three steps between you and the snow. Members of our staff are on hand and happy to provide assistance at the top!
The popular panoramic mountain above Garmisch-Partenkirchen is accessible via a 20 minute ride with the Wankbahn lifts. A ramp at the base station facilitates wheelchair access to the platform and you can reach the observation platform at ground level from the top station of the lifts. Our staff are happy to provide assistance when entering or exiting the lifts. Please note that the Wankbahn lift can only accommodate wheelchairs with a maximum width of 57 cm. Unfortunately, electronic wheelchairs cannot be transported!
Disabled customers with valid ID will receive a discount on all our rides including the cable car, the cogwheel train and day ski passes.
