Climbing in the Garmisch-Cassic Region
Vertical without limits
The complete spectrum of alpine climbing is possible in the Wetterstein limestone surroundings of the Alpspitz Region. Rock lovers encounter a dazzling array of high alpine tours and climbing areas, only 15 minutes away from the mountain terminal of the Alpspitzbahn lifts.
Families with children will no doubt enjoy the „Müsliprotz“ (granola show-off) and „Radelnde Hexe“ (cycling witch) climbing gardens. Ambitious beginners can try their luck on the sloping limestone slabs up to 30 metres high. By contrast, sports climbers will find plenty of challenges at the "Himmelsburg" and "Nordwand" climbing gardens. And if you still haven't had enough, the multiple rope-length climbs in the Schöngängen cliffs, the Bernadeinwand wall or the Alpspitze north face offer sheer climbing pleasure. Definitely an area suitable for experienced climbers with the right equipment!
The “Mauerläufersteig” opened in 2009 ("very difficult to extremely difficult" D/E) and is considered to be one of the most challenging routes in the northern Alps. With the equally revered Alpspitz-Ferrata („moderately difficult“ B) they form an impressive and not to be missed “Ferrate duo”.
