Frequently asked questions and answers about the current situation

Dear guests,

We look forward to welcoming you back to our areas in winter. We have developed a hygiene concept for our cable cars, the cogwheel train and our restaurants, so that you can enjoy a safe and relaxed stay with us. But we also rely on your personal responsibility and solidarity!

Please note that these regulations - depending on the current infection situation and the legal requirements - can still change before and during the winter season. Therefore, please inform yourself about the currently applicable regulations before your visit.

We thank you for your cooperation and wish you a pleasant stay in our mountain world.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

The ski season on the Zugspitze starts on November 19, 2021. The Garmisch-Classic ski area will open in early / mid-December, depending on the snow conditions.

For the season opening on the Zugspitze, the chairlifts Wetterwandeck and Sonnenkar with their associated slopes are open. You can always find more information in our live information.

To use the cable cars, cogwheel train and ski lifts, a proof of 2G+ (vaccinated or recovered and additionally a negative Covid test) must be presented together with a valid ID. In addition, an FFP2 mask is mandatory in all interior rooms, waiting areas (outside and inside), in the cable car cabins, the cogwheel train as well as in ski lifts.

Every guest is checked before access to the Cable car Zugspitze or the cogwheel train. Please have your ID, 2G proof as well as an actual, negative Covid test certificate ready for inspection at the train stations, stops and the valley station of the Cable car Zugspitze.

To use the cable cars, cogwheel train and ski lifts, a valid identification document must be presented along with one of the following certificates:

  • Vaccination certificate: proof of a complete vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with one or more vaccines named by the Paul Ehrlich Institute.
  • Proof of recovery: Proof of previous infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with a positive PCR test that is at least 28 days and a maximum of six months old.

AND

  • Covid-19 test: Negative PCR test that is not older than 48 hours or negative PoC antigen test that is not older than 24 hours. Tests that have been taken at home cannot be accepted.

If you want to get tested, there are a numerous test centers in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen: https://www.lra-gap.de/de/corona-testangebote.html

Please note the regulations for the appointment allocation.

On the valley route between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Eibsee, the cogwheel train runs as public transport. Guests who only travel on this route need a 3G certificate (vaccinated, recovered or tested). To use the mountain route to Zugspitze a 2G+ certificate (vaccinated/recovered and tested) and the ID must be presented. The checks already take place on the platform before boarding the train.

Children up to their 6th birthday are exempt from the mask requirement. Children and teenagers between the ages of six and sixteen only need to wear a medical face mask.

In general, children younger than 12 years and 3 months do not have to provide proof of 2G+. The exception rule applies also to schoolchildren. This means that pupils are exempt from the 2G + rule with presentation of a student ID. Whether this also applies during the holidays is still to be clarified. For young people who cannot present a student ID, the 2G + proof applies (proof of vaccination/recovery and a negative Covid test).

Anyone who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons must present a corresponding medical certificate and a PCR test (max. 48 hours old) for using the cable cars, cogwheel train and ski lifts. All other rules (FFP2 mask etc.) apply.

An FFP2 face mask must be worn in all indoor rooms, queuing areas (outside and inside), in the cable car cabins, the cogwheel train and ski lifts.

A registration for contact tracking is not necessary.

ANNUAL TICKETS & SEASON PASSES

Every guest must present a 2G certificate (vaccinated or recovered) as well as a actual, negative test certificate to use the cable cars, cogwheel train and ski lifts. This also applies to season and annual ticket holders. However, season ticket holders do not necessarily have to present ID, as the season or annual pass is already personalized with a picture.

Every guest is checked before access to the Cable car Zugspitze or the cogwheel train. Please have your ID, 2G proof and the actual negative test certificate ready for checks at the train stations, stops and the valley station of the Cable car Zugspitze.

It may be possible during the winter season to permanently assign proof of vaccination or recovery to your skipass so that you do not have to be checked every time. This function is currently still under development and therefore not yet available.

The 2G/2G+ regulation applies to all guests, including annual pass holders who have already bought the pass in the summer (before the GTC change to 2G). In this case, of course, you have the right to return your annual pass if you cannot or do not want to provide proof of 2G/2G+. You can find more information on this in the next answer.

For annual tickets that were purchased before the terms and conditions were changed (October 2021), it is of course possible to return the pass. Please note the following:

  • A return is possible at any time (before the expiry of the validity). You can still keep the skipass and, if necessary, return it at a later date.
  • When calculating the reimbursement amount, the price of the services used is deducted from the original purchase price. For a Garmisch-Classic tour for an adult in the summer of 2021 this would be e.g. B. € 30.00.

If you wish a reimbursement, please send us your name, ticket number and bank details by email to erstattung@zugspitze.de.

If you bought your pass after the general terms and conditions were changed in October 2021, it is not possible to return it due to an 2G/2G+ rule, as you were explicitly referred to the corresponding § 10 paragraph 3 of our terms and conditions when you bought it.

No. Annual and season pass holders can use the cable cars and cogwheel train without an additional ticket or prior registration. However, if the legally prescribed capacity is exhausted, season ticket holders who arrive later may no longer be transported.+

If you only buy the pass (do not use it directly), no proof needs to be presented at the cash desk. As soon as you use one of the cable cars, ski lifts or the cogwheel train, however, you are obliged to carry appropriate proof with you, provided that this is prescribed in the currently applicable ordinance.

CAPACITIES IN THE CABLE CARS

According to the legal regulation of November 24th, 2021, the maximum number of visitors per day is limited. Once this capacity has been reached, no more visitors may be transported. This applies to all guests, including holders of seasonal and annual passes, multi-day passes, etc.

The capacities in the cable car cabins and trains are reduced.

Please note: Due to this reduced capacity, waiting times are expected, especially on busy days (weekends, holidays, nice weather). We ask for your patience and understanding in this regard. For Zugspitze there is a daily ticket contingent. If these are sold out, ticket sales will be stopped.

All cabins and buildings are cleaned regularly in accordance with the valid guidelines.

Our regular timetables apply. If necessary, our trains run at a higher frequency.

RESTAURANTS

From November 19, the restaurants on Zugspitze will be open again (Panorama 2962, Gletschergarten and Sonnalpin). The restaurants in Garmisch-Classic open in early / mid-December as soon as there is enough snow for skiing.

Registration for contact data tracking is not necessary.

In all restaurants it is mandatory to wear a FFP2 face mask when entering. The mask may only be removed at the table. When leaving the table, for example when going to the toilet, the face mask must be worn again.

The 2G proof (vaccinated or recovered) is also valid in the restaurants. There is no general control in the restaurants on the Zugspitze, as all guests are already checked when entering the cable car or cogwheel train.
